I turned funny t-shirts that I didn't wear into silly underwear. This Gamelab freebie was my first pair. I followed up quickly followed by a Supergirl flocked pair from a way too small t-shirt picked up from a clothing swap. Since it was too narrow to convert into covering my hips, I added white and red panels from other t-shirts in the discard pile.

The awesome rick-rack elastic was from Daytona Trims. This project was so easy and useful, I'm looking for more t-shirts to convert.
I put it up for sale as soon as I finished! I love lab coats as aprons with their full coverage, and food science is the most delicious science of all. So I hand embroidered my personal kitchen logo, "Cooking Is Chemistry." I'm trying to decide about fonts or additional graphics (flask? molecule diagram?) for future versions. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I've had an amazing time with Thing-A-Day this year, although I did have a few neurotic moments around 11:30pm. I used their tool for this purpose that can be found under Filter->Other->Offset. I'm no expert, but as far as I can tell it only seems to work properly on images that are already flattened. The images I used are hand-carved stamps that I had made long ago. The dinosaur was just carved directly out of an eraser stamped with that picture, but the other two are original. These digital images were hanging out on my computer and vaguely looked the same style. That was probably all they had in common, but if you can come up with some story that links dinosaurs, bell jar traps and superstar people, I want to hear it!

One more day!

However, the hanging loop is improved over yesterday's attempt. This one will also be going to a friend for a livejournal meme challenge. I prefer to make people useful objects a majority of the time since every time I use a handmade object in my daily life I tend to remember where it came from.
.
In other news, someone blogged about my etsy.com shop today. One for college days, one for travel to Korea and Thailand, and the third which is only partially done of the time I lived in Japan. It looks like I may have to get another one to put family photos, and my high school photos might fit in one of the smaller albums that are free after the shuffling. This certainly reminds me that I should be taking more photos of family and friends since there are large gaps in time that I wish I had better documented.

I should have taken a before photo to truly show off the transformation, since it used to have a cracked vinyl cover. I used some fabric that I bought from a fun discount fabric warehouse in Hilo, Hawaii a little over a year ago. The chair was found on the street in NYC, and I've been meaning to give it a face lift for a while. Eventually I may strip off the paint to expose the really high quality wood underneath.

I really needed a lunch bag/box that would hold the Gladware plastic containers that I frequently toss my lunch into to carry to work. I like a little fabric between my lunch and the rest of the stuff in my shoulder bag and had this weird off-cut from work that is 18" by forever of a lovely French upholstery material. Yes, it is too pretty to absorb my grubby spills, but there are worst fates of excess fabric in the world. I'm obsessive sometimes...so might be able to see how the flowers match above and below the zipper.

Thing-A-Day #12: Valentine Lolita Bonnet

I was feeling rather uninspired at the beginning, but once I was in the throws of creating, I realized that my Valentine-in-progress looked more like a bonnet than a card. In this picture it is being shown off by thatphilguy . In the end I made another card for the hostess and will take this project to my office to make my co-workers wear it in turn. Here's a slightly more blurry one with another model.
